Crab Stuff

23:11 Aug 29 2009
Times Read: 692

Sshh....one of the little crabs is investigating a newer, bigger shell. This usually happens when I am either asleep or away, so I never get to see what goes on. It's fascinating.

First he makes sure no other crab is in there. Each bit of the shell, inside and out, is explored. The shell is turned over and tugged along to see how much it weighs. Little claws explore the surface, patting it over (crabs like smooth homes).

He pokes his head and upper body inside the shell to see what that's like. The claws grip the outside of the shell while he snoops inside.

Aww...he decided he didn't want this one just yet. He just pushed the shell away and strolled off to the food dish.

Maybe later?

Crab Stuff

Clawde has been feisty lately. He discovered that, by standing atop the food dish when it is full, he can reach the top of the crab house. He just reaches over with his biggest claw and pulls himself up. Trouble is, he can't figure out how to get down from there, and either sits until I rescue him, or attempts to climb down himself and ends up toppling ass over tip.

I bought some dried fruit bits for crabs at the pet store. You take a few out, moisten them and put them in the food dish. I had barely gotten them in when Clawde saw what was going on and trundled over to get a better look. As I was re-arranging the bits of fruit in the dish, he reached over with his biggest claw....and gently pushed my hand out of the way so he could get to the fruit.

Awww.

He likes the dried apple and cranberry, in fact he lorded over the food dish and wouldn't let any of the others in there till he was done. When he finally strolled off, I put some new fruit in and shooed the littlest crabs over so they could get some. They had a ball testing it with their antenna, and finally deciding it was ok to eat.

Ever since he's moulted, Clawde has got a new lease on life. He's so much more active and fun to watch!

Crab Toy Fun

22:26 Aug 07 2009

Clawde loves the climbing log. I might as well call it "his" climbing log as he is the only one who uses it. All week I've been laid up with a bad back, and been getting my mind off the aches and pains by watching him enjoy his new toy.

He climbed to the top of it yesterday, and started to rock on it a little bit, and before I knew it his weight had pulled it over onto the two littler crabs who were snoozing underneath it. After rescuing the little guys and setting the log back up, Clawde was on it again. I have a water dish next to the log so it's sort of like a lagoon set up. He likes to set in the water dish, playing in the water, then climbing on top of the log and perch there to watch over things.

And, if I listen real close I can hear him: "I'm the King of the woooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrllld"!!

Crab Toys

22:27 Aug 01 2009
Times Read: 723

Yes, they make toys for crabs. Today I was in the pet shop snooping around (they tend to get new stock in around the first of the month) and found an interesting thing.

It's a climbing toy that looks like old gnarled tree bark or driftwood, but it's cork and you can clean it. The piece I chose is about half the length of my forearm and you lean it up in the corner of the tank and the crabs can climb it, or hide under it.

I really wasn't expecting much of a reaction but my biggest crab, Clawde was awake when I came home and as soon as I put the new item in the tank he came over to inspect. Much to my amazement he tried to climb it right away, hooking onto the various nubs and bumps of the surface. His big claws reached up and he pulled himself up it and he had a good time climbing on it.

Hopefully the little ones will watch him and try it for themselves later on. Right now they are snoozing. I changed all the sand the other night and the smell of the new stuff was a little upsetting to them as it always is, they ran around and around until they were satisfied that all was well. In the morning I saw that they had each found a corner and dug themselves a little trench, a sure sign that the crabs were happy.

My little guys are such fun to watch as they explore things.
